  •  Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements
  • Current International Code Council (ICC) certification in Building Plans Examiner or Fire Plans Examiner OR a minimum level III NICET (National Institute for the Certification of Engineering Technologies).
  • Every person employed by the City of Scottsdale shall reside in the State of Arizona during his or her active employment by the City, regardless of whether the employee is approved to remote work.

Fire Inspector - Avondale Fire & Medical Department, Avondale, AZ

This position inspects residential and commercial building projects. Reads blueprints. Conducts fire safety inspections of new and existing facilities. Conducts acceptance tests of fire protection systems. Conducts fire cause and origin investigations, which include evidence preservation, detailed report writing, and possible court testimony. Prepares violation notices, and inspection reports and enters information into a computerized database. Researches fire code violations and provides direction and/or technical assistance for correction of identified violations. Investigates citizen complaints involving fire safety or hazardous conditions. Assists as needed with fire code plan reviews and education programs. Performs related duties, as assigned. The description/qualifications for this position should be in conformance with NFPA 1031 (Fire Inspector) Level II and NFPA 1033 (Fire Investigator).

Essential Functions

  • Inspects residential and commercial buildings by verifying compliance with all applicable city, state, and federal codes and ordinances.
  • Inspects new construction projects for fire code compliance according to NFPA 1031.
  • Educates business owners, homeowners, and the general public on fire life safety, including fire prevention and the basics of how fire protection systems work.
  • Attends continuing education for changes to fire protection systems, fire codes, and re-certifications.
  • Writes detailed reports and maintains appropriate records and files. Enters inspection information into data systems.
  • Must be available to serve on an "on-call basis" on a rotating schedule in addition to regularly scheduled work hours. Regular business hours are Monday through Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate degree or any equivalent combination of experience, education, and technical training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may qualify.
  • Four (4) years of experience working as a Fire Inspector I.
  • Fire Inspector I & II – ICC; Fire/Arson Investigator 1- 4, IAAI FIT, or NAFI CFEI.
  • The position requires wearing a respirator. Must be able to successfully complete medical exam/evaluation to be authorized to wear a respirator in the workplace.

Fire Marshal - Daisey Mountain Fire District, Anthem, AZ

The Fire Marshal directly oversees and manages fire prevention activities conducted by the District, including fire investigations, plan review process, fire code inspection / enforcement, permit issuance, training of District employees in the relevant areas of fire prevention, and is responsible for the overall administration of the Fire Prevention Division’s programs and services; Serves as District liaison to the Counties of Maricopa and Yavapai, working closely with them to meet their community development and code enforcement mandates; Coordinates and collaborates with fire districts, fire departments and fire agencies regarding fire code development, adoption of standards and fire code enforcement; advocates for fire service issues. The Fire Marshal reports to the Fire Chief or his designee and keeps them informed of all functions and important matters concerning fire prevention activities. 

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

  • Associate degree (AA) in Fire Science or related field, OR
  • Two (2) years of college level course work in Fire Science, Public Administration or related field AND five (5) years of progressive experience in fire service with at least three (3) years of experience in fire prevention involving code enforcement, public education, instructional techniques and methodology OR  
  • Equivalent education/experience.  

PREFERRED EDUCATION:

  • Completion of a four-year (Bachelor) degree program in Fire Protection Engineering, Fire Science, Public Management, Business Administration or related field. CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES
  • International Code Council or IFSAC Fire Inspector I & II certifications, or equivalent, are required.
  • International Code Council Fire Plans Examiner certification or equivalent education/experience is preferred. However, must be obtained within two (2) years of hire.
  • Fireworks certification
  • Battery Storage System knowledge and/or certification
